PTO Update

Hello everyone,

Our next Davis MS PTO meeting will be Friday April 22 at noon in the library media center.  Note that this is a change to the typical meeting on Wednesday!  Please join us in the meeting, we will be voting on the proposed teacher grant requests for the 2016-2017 school year.  You can find the grant requests posted to the PTO blog here.

Attention 8th grade parents!  Please be on the lookout for upcoming information on how to send in pictures of your soon-to-graduate 8th graders.  The PTO will be putting together a video collage of pictures to be shown at the 8th grade graduation ceremony on Friday June 3.  Details to come soon!

Next Thursday is Dublin City Schools Family Night – please see this flyer for some event suggestions and ideas for things to do as a family:  Family Night Out April 2016

The Dublin Taiko Group is holding an annual Taiko Gala concert featuring students from Dublin City Schools.  The event is Sunday April 24 at 6:00 at Coffman High School.  Please see this flyer for details: Taiko 2016 Gala Flyer

Members Present

Meeting Began at 12:05 noon

Principal’s Report – Jason

  • Shawn Mallory won the Golden Shamrock award on Monday night at the District Board Meeting
  • 11 students nominated for living the Irish Way (we have 14 total)
  • Master planning meeting tonight at Davis at 7 pm
  • 8th Grade Graduation date change – made to be consistent with the other middle schools. The date will be Friday, June 3rd (from the last day of school – Monday, June 6th)

Treasurer’s report – Satish

  • We have $46,399 in savings and $4,495 in checking
  • Review of the transactions for the month. Leeanne made a motion to submit the financials, Renea seconded the motion. All were in favor.
  • The Davis PTO funds a scholarship for a graduating student that attended Davis. The applications have been received (28 total).
  • Teacher Grants – review submitted grants, discuss recommendations for April’s meeting
    • We received 3 grant requests. Will review 2 at this meeting.
    • Grant 1: Replace Crash Mats for Physical Education for $1396
    • Grant 2: Scholastic Scope Magazine for 6th grade Language Arts Teachers for $296.97
    • Grant 3: Media Center Phase III – not going to submit as a grant request. In the budget today we have $2000 set aside to support Phase II of the media center. To date, we have spent $5000 on the media center. The PTO and Principal will discuss how the PTO can support the larger project going forward and to what amount. More details will be brought to the PTO meetings, as information is available.

Secretary’s report – Noreen

  • Review of February meeting minutes. Leeanne made a motion to submit the minutes, Renea seconded the motion. All were in favor.

President’s Report – Daniel

  • PTO Presidents meeting notes
    • 10 year student enrollment projection – an additional of 2000-3000 new students expected
  • Volunteer breakfast in May
  • Upcoming events
    • March 16 7:00 p.m. – Master Planning meeting @ Davis
    • March 21-25 – No school, spring break
    • April 1 – Dodgeball Tournament at Scioto

Greetings everyone,

January PTO Meeting Minutes

Meeting Began at 12:05 noon 

Media Center Presentation – Cheryl Angel (Media Center Specialist)

  • 3 phases to the Media Center
    • Phase 1 – COMPLETE
      • Collaborative workspace to the right of the center desk
      • Used frequently by individual students and classes
    • Phase 2
      • Space to the left of the center desk
      • Will be transformed from it’s current state to a “digital maker space”
    • Phase 3
      • Larger open space area of the center
      • Still to be fully designed
  • Changes to media center prompted by the following:
    • Shift in education from being not just consumers of information to being creators with the information provided.
    • Dublin IT Academy (at the High School) – first year for this academy. Students attend ½ of classes where they learn to code/program. When they graduate from HS they will have 14 credit hours from Columbus State.       Open to all Dublin students but housed at Dublin Scioto High School.
    • Our job is to grow Thinkers – kids that ask questions, collaborate, create and innovate, persevere, think flexibly, and present ideas with confidence.
    • Teachers have moved to more “Problem Based / Project Based Learning”. Students need to take their learning and apply it and present the information in a new and creative way.
    • Maker Spaces are popping up all over the place – a place where young people can explore their own interests, learn to use tools and materials both physical and virtual and develop creative projects.
  • Phase 2 Discussion:
    • Goal of Phase 2 – define space and provide tools that give students opportunities to explore and learn in ways that promote thinking skills.
    • Students might come during their classes to use the space; during study center time; girls coding program will use the space.
    • Space will be in line with vision of the District
    • Phase 2 Budget:
      • Total cost $9,382
      • Secured funds $4,382
      • Pending PTO $2,000 (allotted in the current budget)
      • Pending DEF Grant $3,000
    • Pending funding Phase 2 could be completed by or near Spring Break timeframe

 

Principal’s Report – Dr. Tracey Deagle

  • In conversations with Central office to bring gifted services model to the middle school level. As this effort progresses, a parent meeting will take place.

Treasurer’s report – Satish Pattisam

  • $47,000 in Savings and $3,000 in Checking as of the meeting.
  • Reviewed expenses.
  • Anna O. made a motion to submit report; Leanne E. seconded the motion; All were in favor.

Secretary’s report – Noreen Marando

  • November meeting minutes reviewed.
  • Leanne E made motion to submit November minutes; Renea D. seconded the motion; All were in favor.

Committee Reports – Daniel Zupnick, Committee Leaders

  • Renea D. has volunteered to take Treasurer responsibilities for the coming year.       Next month an official vote will take place.
  • Theresa Whealdon and Melissa S. have met on the PTO Sponsored Canteen
    • DJ is set
    • Looking into photo booth options. PTO agreed to cover the expense of the photo booth – allowing all kids to get a picture taken.
    • Looking for prize donations from local businesses.
    • We need close to 20 parent chaperones that night. Melissa will create a sign up for the event.

PTO President’s Update & Upcoming PTO Meeting

First and foremost, welcome to 2016!

Please join us in the Library Media Center on Wednesday January 20 at noon for our next PTO meeting.  Along with other important PTO updates, we will hear from Mrs. Cheryl Angel (Media Center Specialist) about the exciting plans for updates and improvements to the library’s media center.  A full agenda for the upcoming PTO meeting is below.

Also ATTACHED HERE is a flyer advertising the upcoming PERC program on February 11 called Bully-Proofing Youth.  If you haven’t had a chance to see Jim Bisenius speak before, it’s worth your time.  He’s a great speaker and PERC has sponsored his presentations a number of times.
